Digital Twins of the Human Body: a new Spoke 9 Research School at SISSA
Two days of lectures, tutorials, and in-depth sessions on biomedical modeling and scientific computing
Trieste, 13th October 2025
Registration for the Research School: Digital Twins of the Human Body—a new educational initiative focused on biomedical modeling and scientific computing, to be held from 10th to 11th December at SISSA, in Trieste—is now open.
The school is promoted by iNEST Spoke 9 as part of the lifelong learning initiatives under Cross-Cutting Activity 4. Its goal is to train a new generation of researchers in the development of digital twins of human organs. At the core of its program is the use of the deal.II library, a high-performance scientific computing platform that enables the simulation of complex biological processes in real time—an innovative tool that marks a significant step toward personalized medicine.
Over the course of the two-day event, participants will explore some of the most pressing challenges in biomedical modeling, including mechanobiology, cardiac medicine, and vascular and brain tissue modeling. The program will also feature sessions on computational aspects, along with hands-on tutorials to experience the implementation of simulation algorithms firsthand. Lecturers include leading Italian and European experts in mathematical and biomedical modeling, such as Prof. Gianluigi Rozza (Spoke 9 coordinator), Prof. Andrea Cangiani (CC4 coordinator for Spoke 9), and Spoke 9 researcher Pasquale Claudio Africa.
