Models, Methods, Computing Technologies for Digital Twin

Digital Twins: mathematics for innovation

Nowadays, a transformative process is underway for industry that optimizes processes and minimizes resource waste: digitalization. This is one of the pillars of the iNEST—Interconnected Nord-Est Innovation Ecosystem—Consortium, enabling industries in Northeastern Italy to establish themselves as efficiency models and innovation drivers.

At the forefront of this digital revolution stands the visionary concept of the Digital Twin (DT), a virtual replica of a real-world product or process. iNEST Spoke 9 dedicates its research efforts to developing Digital Twins and applying them across diverse fields, utilizing advanced mathematical and numerical modeling tools.

Research Topics

The research activities of Spoke 9 are articulated into four Research Topics (RTs), designed to tackle the forefront challenges in the fields of mathematical and numerical models, scientific computing, and Digital Twins.

MATHEMATICAL, NUMERICAL AND DATA-DRIVEN MODELING

A robust framework for mathematical modeling is forged with existing methods and software. Researchers ensure the reliability and accuracy of their models through testing with datasets, with the aid of Uncertainty Quantification.

MODEL ORDER REDUCTION

Model Order Reduction is a formidable tool for mathematical simulations: MOR helps simplify the most complex parts, facilitating real-time calculation.
This allows scientists to improve the accuracy of mathematical models.

AUTOMATIC LEARNING FOR DIGITAL TWINS

The synergy of Machine Learning and MOR finds application in high-performance computing, enabling the development of automatic Digital Twins (DTs) in industry. In this way, mathematicians pave the way for smart integration of these technologies.

APPLICATIONS OF DIGITAL TWIN IN INDUSTRY, MEDICINE, ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES, DAILY LIFE

The potential of Digital Twins is not just limited to industry; it also emerges in other areas—the environment, healthcare, and daily life—by crafting tailor-made applications.

Cross-Cutting Activities

iNEST vision of innovation and sustainability finds tangible expression through the Cross-Cutting Activities (CCs), which fuel the transformative power of technologies developed within Spoke 9.

SUPPORT TO THE GENERATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF START-UPS AND SPIN-OFFS

A pathway developed by individual Spokes to generate and select innovative ideas, to be transformed into research start-ups and spin-offs.

CREATION OF A NETWORK OF JOINT STRATEGIC LABORATORIES BETWEEN UNIVERSITIES AND COMPANIES

Universities and research institutions promote a different collaboration model with companies, focusing on Lab Villages.

CITIZEN ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVES

The engagement of citizens, the local community, and civil society is at the heart of the iNEST project, as well as of all recent EU communications and strategies.

EDUCATION, FROM ITS TO LIFELONG LEARNING

Developing the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values that enable people to contribute to and benefit from an inclusive and sustainable future.

Fundings for companies and young researchers

Cascade Funding Calls

Spoke 9 fosters innovation by funding companies in the Triveneto and Mezzogiorno regions that propose projects for developing Digital Twins. Fundings have been distributed through two rounds of Cascade Calls.

Young Researcher Grants

Young researchers of Spoke 9 receive funding through Young Researcher Grants. These grants enable them to attend conferences, organize workshops, and hire new resources.
