Digital Twins: from mathematics, a catalyst for innovation
A dramatic shift is on the horizon in modern economics, and at its core lies the transformative force of digitalization. This revolutionary process allows for the constant optimization of processes and substantial cost savings, hence marking the beginning of a new era of efficiency across industries. Digitalization is a pillar of the iNEST Consortium: it is the key for industries in North-Eastern Italy to establish themselves as efficiency models and innovation drivers.
At the forefront of this digital revolution stands the visionary concept of the Digital Twin (DT), the virtual replica of a real-world product or process. iNEST Spoke 9 dedicates all its research efforts to the development of Digital Twins and their application across diverse fields. Yet, to truly harness their potential, a deep understanding of the underlying behaviors and functions of their real-world counterparts is essential. In the quest to create accurate Digital Twins, scientists wield sophisticated tools of mathematical and numerical modeling. Real-time data flows between physical objects and virtual replicas facilitate constant communication and refinement. To ensure ever-closer alignment between DTs and their real counterparts, invaluable support is provided by mathematical and numerical tools such as Reduced Order Models and Uncertainty Quantification techniques.Leader and Partners
Thanks to their research activities, the Spoke 9 Leader and Partners will drive innovation and efficiency to unprecedented heights.
Research Topics
The research activities of Spoke 9 are supported and enhanced by four Research Topics (RTs),
designed to tackle the forefront challenges in the fields of mathematical and numerical models, scientific computing, and Digital Twins.
MATHEMATICAL, NUMERICAL AND DATA-DRIVEN MODELING
A robust framework for mathematical modeling is forged, integrating it with existing methods and software. Through meticulous testing with datasets, together with the aid of Uncertainty Quantification (UQ), researchers ensure the reliability and accuracy of their models.
MODEL ORDER REDUCTION
Model Order Reduction (MOR) is a formidable tool for mathematical simulations, rendering complex computations much more manageable. MOR leads
to improved real-time computing and incorporates UQ, helping scientists navigate through diverse problems
in their quest for accuracy and reliability.
AUTOMATIC LEARNING FOR DIGITAL TWINS
The dynamic synergy of Machine Learning (ML)
and Reduced Order Models (ROMs) finds a pioneering application in High-Performance Computing, as
the frontier of automatic Digital Twins (DTs) in industry
is approached. Through seamless and perpetual data exchange, scientists pave the way for smart industrial integration.
APPLICATIONS OF DIGITAL TWIN IN INDUSTRY, MEDICINE, ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES, DAILY LIFE
Embark on an exploration of the transformative potential of DTs across various sectors—from the environment
to healthcare, improving daily life, and revolutionizing industrial processes. To meet the needs of each sector, digitizable elements are pinpointed and tailor-made applications are crafted.
Cross-Cutting Activities
iNEST’s vision of innovation and sustainability finds tangible expression through four Cross-Cutting Activities (CCs). These activities fuel the transformative power of the cutting-edge technologies developed within the scope of Spoke 9, making them a beacon of progress across diverse sectors.
